Meet the Director

The Maryville Intermediate School Orchestra is directed by Melissa Wormser who is currently in her ninth year of teaching in the Maryville City School system. She holds both a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music with an emphasis in Music Education from the University of Mississippi. She has performed with the Maryville-Alcoa College Community Orchestra for the past seven years.

The orchestra program at Maryville Intermediate School meets regularly during the school day. Students learn to play the string instruments: violin, viola, cello, and bass. The fifth grade year concentrates on basic skills needed for successful performance on students' individual instruments. The sixth grade year explores beginning orchestra literature while continuing to develop individual musicianship. This allows for a focus on specific playing techniques as well as ensemble work. Both orchestra groups cover general music ideas of theory, ear training, and history.

It is my goal that through orchestra, the student will learn life skills, aesthetics, course skills (performance based), and an enjoyment and appreciation of music.    --Melissa Wormser
