How to Organize and Log Your Practice
1. Schedule time each day to practice.
2. Your school orchestra teacher and your private teacher will assign scales, etudes, and pieces for you to practice along with technical and musical goals they would like for you to achieve in each. Write these assignments down in an organized way for yourself.
3. As you practice, work first on passages that challenge your technical level. Start your practice session with a set of technical warm ups and scales focusing on correct left and right hand form and precision of tempo and intonation. Then work difficult passages of your etudes and pieces slowly with a metronome. If a section seems hard, figure out whether the problem lies in the left hand, the right hand or in your head. Create ways to solve the technical problems. Using the metronome, make sure you have solved all technical problems first at a slow tempo, then increase the metronome tempo one increment and check technical success at that tempo. Continue this process for each passage you practice. Slow Pracice->Fast Learning. Next, work on the interpretation of the selections. Practice dynamics, tempo changes, and articulation in small sections. Finally, once you have mastered the technique and interpretation of each smaller section, practice the "performance" of each etude or piece. That is, practice playing the selection all the way through incorporating the skills and interpretation you have learned in the earlier parts of your practice session.
4. After each practice session, record in detail (on paper and at Molto Music) the selections you have worked, the ways you have worked them and the metronome markings achieved. Try for continually better results daily.
