Honors Orchestra


Course Description: This course develops instrumental proficiencies on an individualized basis in the areas of instrumental technique, fundamentals of music (music theory), musicianship concepts and performance experiences. Prerequisite is completion of Instrumental Competency Level 2. The student must be enrolled in the regular orchestra class I order to participate in Honors Orchestra. This course is a Group 2 bonus point course that may be taken for a maximum of two terms at Competency Level 3 and two terms at Competency Level 4.

Supplementary Course Text: Essential Elements for Strings. Kjos.

Required Student Course Materials: Individual instrument; rosin, mute, shoulder pad (violins and violas), rock stop (cellos), concert attire.

Fees: $15

Essential Academic Content/Competencies:

Level 3
A. Instrumental technique
1. Scales: minor (natural, melodic and harmonic)
2. Prepared piece: etude or concerto excerpt
3. Periodic private instruction and guidance in developing an individualized program of study

B. Fundamentals of music
1. Music theory workbook and self-paced study
2. Sight singing and ear training study (software available)
3. Score analysis and interpretation and/or composition/arranging

C. Musicianship concepts
1. Conducting basics: patterns; techniques; resources
2. Rehearsal techniques as a director

D. Performance experiences
1. Large ensembles
2. Small ensemble or recital performance

Level 4
A. Instrumental technique
1. Minor scales including jazz and improvisation application
2. Prepared concerto (approval by director) to be evaluated by a jury of musicians
3. Program of independent study to be developed in conjunction with a private instructor

B. Fundamentals of music
1. Music arranging and writing
2. Project based on student interest which will be performed for evaluation

C. Musicianship concepts
1. Mentoring/tutoring a younger student and developing short and long term goals for the instrumentalist
2. Advanced conducting with a goal of directing and rehearsing for a concert
