Frequently Asked Questions


How much should my student practice at home?

A minimum of 2.5 hours individual practice per week is needed at home.


Should my student take private lessons?

Private lessons are encouraged, but not required. Opportunities to study with private instructors are available during and after school. Lesson lengths range between 30 and 60 minutes and cost between $15 and $40 per lesson. For more information contact Mr. Robinson or click HERE.


What is appropriate formal concert attire?

Boys should wear a black tux or black suit with black bow tie, cummerbund, black socks and black shoes. White tux shirt. Girls wear the orchestra concert dress (ordered and purchased through the orchestra, cost: $55) with black hose and black shoes.


What is appropriate informal concert attire?

Girls and boys will wear a white polo shirt embroidered with the MHS Soft Bach Cafe' logo. These are ordered and purchased through the orchestra. Cost: $25


Where will the orchestra travel for the spring trip this year?

Plans will be discussed at fall Open House, August 10th. Further information will be posted on the MHS Orchestra web page.


What happens to the funds raised by/for the orchestra?

This money is used to purchase audio/video equipment, classroom equipment, classroom furnishings and the labor to install them; instruments and instrument repair; concert hall rental; guest artist fees and travel expenses; and student scholarships.


What are the current needs of the orchestra?

1) Student Electronic Music Technology Station, Technological Development

2) Portable digital recorder for classroom/concert use

3) Student scholarships for Summer Music Camps


How can I volunteer to help the orchestra?

By contacting Lynda Spalding, or Amy Large, Opus co-chairs.


What is Opus?

A parent organization formed to help support and undergird orchestra students both as individuals and as a collective group. Their work consists of a large array of behind-the-scenes tasks.


What is the best way to stay informed about all orchestra related matters?

Ask your student frequently about what is happening in orchestra and/or go to the MHS website and link to the orchestra page.
